The former Fifth Harmony girl band member is opening up about her time as part of the group an how that affected her. Normani Kordei chatted with Billboard not too long ago, and during the interview, she spoke her truth about her struggles with identity and race while in Fifth Harmony.
Apparently, her problems were often related to her skin color, and while the other girls tried to help, she explained that ‘I do not think they had the tools they needed, because it is not their experience. I give them some credit for trying to be there for me, but at the same time… The girls do not experience things the way I did.’
Back in 2016, things got really out of hand when people thought she had shaded Camila Cabello during a Facebook Live interview.
Fans started to send her death threats, messages filled with racial slurs as well as images depicting lynchings!
It was so bad that Camila had to ask fans to not cyber-bully her bandmate anymore.
According to the 22-year-old, all of that racism affected her mentally without even realizing.
‘You think, ‘Why am I the least followed in the group?’ Even if you do not recognize that you are paying close attention to it, it takes a toll on your confidence. You worry — is it me? Is it because I am black? Or am I just not talented?’ she shared with the news outlet.
But unfortunately, it didn’t happen only on social media.
Apparently, in the recording studio, she dealt with unfair treatment as well and a lot of sessions, she would cry her eyes out.

She went on to recall that one time she was made to only do background vocals for ‘No Way’ while all the other girls got their own time to shine.
